Robert Montego's narration includes a brief biography of Marian Anderson, comments concerning the opinions that Toscanini and Sibelius held of Anderson, a comparison of Anderson to other singers who were her contemporaries, a description of her various vocal characteristics (with recorded excerpts for illustration), an account of the 1939 Lincoln Memorial concert that came about as a result of the refusal of the D.A.R. to allow Anderson to perform in Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., and other aspects of Marian Anderson's life and career. The excerpt from the interview with Anderson's accompanist Franz Rupp deals with the effects of racial prejudices. Excerpts from the Robert Dawn interviews with Marian Anderson include her discussions about the influence of Roland Hayes on her life, her recollections of Paul Robeson, the Lincoln Memorial concert, the effects of her performance at the Metropolitan Opera, and some of her basic beliefs about life.
